I've never done anything like this, I was very nervous to do this, and the negative reviews definitely didn't help. I really thought I'd end up breaking my joycons, but I decided to give it a try anyways. I ended up finding a tutorial on YouTube that replaced the shell without detaching any ribbon cables, only screws, and it was super helpful. For both of the joycons it only ended up taking me around an hour and 45 minutes. I used the screwdriver included in the kit and didn't have any problems with the screws being stripped, I just took my time and was careful unscrewing them. If you are hesitant about this, I would recommend that you give it a try!I used fine-point tweezers and a nicer screwdriver than the one provided. Takes some time to install, I spend around 2-3 hours. The instruction video had no verbal instructions, but was helpful. Wouldn't recommend buying this if you're someone who doesn't like taking things apart, or are intimidated by handling tiny, delicate electronics.Seeing quite a few reviews dissuading potential DIYers from buying these, claiming they ruined their joycons, etc. The product doesn't deserve poor reviews for the buyers' own mishaps. It's a risk that no inexperienced person should jump into unprepared BUT you also don't need to have 20 years in electronic customization experience to tackle these. Take your time, even watch a few videos on electronics in general, and give these a shot. You might awaken a passion for tinkering you didn't know you had!Anyway, my customized joycons are still doing great a year later and I plan on buying more shells soon. The only other caveat, besides the risk relevant to any DIY electronics project, is the color wears off pretty quickly :/ Buy some clear coat protectant to spray on before assembling. If you're interested and daring, just come prepared, don't panic, and have FUN! It's a rewarding hobby!Installing these things isn't for the faint-hearted or impatient. You need to really take your time, go slow, and triple-check instructions. Overall, I'm happy with the end result, but holy cow. I ruined a pair of joycons in the process because I wasn't sure whether to disconnect a ribbon or not or how to do so, and ended up breaking the bit. That's on me though, so I'm not taking any points off of the product itself -- it works as intended and is high quality. The color is perfect and these covers feel soft to the touch. I just wish they weren't so hard to install.I only subtracted one star because the included Y screwdriver tool is absolutely useless and strips screws, as other reviewers have noted. Use your own toolkit instead! I have the iFixIt mako tool kit and the Y-bit worked like a dream, and I could keep all the screws separate with the tray. This project can easily become a mess if you're not organized and prepared with the right tools. There are many, many screws: thankfully, the vendor provides extra in case you lose some, but they're not labeled and all bundled together in one package that's not resealable.TL;DR: Go slow. Check instructions. Watch videos -- pause and rewind. Stay organized. Use your own tools. And you'll love the end product!Title. If you have a favorite color that isn't already offered as an offical Joycon colorway, or have any inkling of persuasion to be unique and let your stuff stand out from others, then you're doing yourself a disservice by not getting a custom shell.eXtremeRate offers a fantastic selection of aesthetically pleasing colors that, for the most part, all go together quite nicely, so it's hard to go wrong if you want to mix and match. I had a hard time deciding between various combinations of white, heaven blue, sakura pink, and light violet. The only suggestion for improvement I have in terms of the selection here is that I wish you could buy the halves separately, as duo-tone Joycons are kind of the precedent set by Nintendo.Quality is top-notch. While the shell and buttons do have a different texture than OEM, they feel every bit as sturdy and are virtually identical to official Joycons. The internals fit perfectly and lined up with every notch and screw hole during the shell swapping operation. The aforementioned different texture on these is just slightly more rubbery/silicone-y, but not at all like the sticky or friction-y kind that picks up all the lint as soon as it touches your pocket lining; I consider it an improvement over the original. While this has nothing to do with the product itself, assembly is pretty dang hard. I wish it were as simple as just unscrewing the plastic case and putting on a new one, but you have to disassemble pretty much the whole controller and migrate multiple layers of parts into the new shells. It's not exaggerating at all when people say expect it to take 3-5 hours for your first try! Fortunately the kit includes the two kinds of screwdriver needed, though it goes by easier if you have your own higher-quality tools.I wouldn't say there is much risk of damaging your Joycons as long as you're careful, have the right tools, and follow a tutorial. Some skills you will need that I would have prepared my past self for: unscrewing some of the outside screws without stripping them (fortunately the kit includes replacement screws that are Philips head instead of tri-wing); pulling out and re-plugging in ribbon cables (you'll absolutely need steady hands and some tweezers or needle-nose pliers), and possibly having to click certain pieces into place like LEGO.Those hours of work paid off, and I'm in love with how they turned out! Definitely way more attached to my Switch now that it has a custom shell and Joycons. I'm honestly tempted to buy an extra set of Joycons or two just to do more custom colorways and mix them around; we'll see. In the meantime, I absolutely recommend getting some for yourself. Shell swapping made out to be a fantastic DIY project that's ultra rewarding and satisfying in the end and really helps make your Switch feel like your own. This purple goes perfect with the seller’s cherry blossom buttons, it in fact does have a really soft touch! I saw a couple of reviews talking about discoloration so I made sure to put this pretty glittery clear case on top! All in all I recommend!Assemble process is relatively easy as long, as you checking online instruction videos. Materials are pleasant to the touchLet me start by saying that the product is exactly what it says on the tin and, if installed correctly - see my second photo - looks and works lovely. HOWEVER. It's a pain to disassemble and re-assemble. You should purchase a separate Y00 tri-wing screwdriver at the very least, and preferably a complete switch dissasembly kit since the tools provided with the eXtremeRate product are extremely sub-par.After that, make sure that you have a good lighting source (I used a couple of bright LED technical lamps) and preferably either an anti-static or rubber mat to catch and sort any screws. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SCREWS! There are lots, of different sizes and both phillips and tri-wing configurations. You don't want to forget which is which! Preferable photograph each state on your phone as you go and follow the youtube video mentioned in the item description.ALSO I highly recommend using an anti-static wristband, the kind used for computer repair stuff, to avoid frying any of the components. I'm a computer technician and network engineer and even with this, and not replacing the buttons (since I was happy with the default switch buttons) the install of both joycon shells and the back plate took me about 5 hours. Don't go into this thinking it's a two minute job! That said, if you're prepared to put the effort in - the end results are totally worth it :).I must confess this took me a very long time to do. I actually stripped the screws on my first try of getting the case off and had to buy another joycon. After this however I had no problems with the fiddly parts inside but getting the ribbon cables back in was stressful. All works! Looks great! I did it myself and very pleased about it. Overall I am 100% satisfied. The item itself is really quite good. You are given extra screws and buttons which is great. Parts fit as good as typical nintendo shells. The problem comes with the included tri-wing screwdriver included. Its god awful and strips every screw. If you do manage to get the screws out use the new included long black screws which are philips heads. Far far easier to use. One joycon took me about an hour with the only problem being the screws. Probably more a nintendo fault. I would suggest getting some fine pointed tweezers so you dont break any ribbon cables. I wouldnt get this product if you are not 100% sure on how to work on micro electronics or have a backup plan incase you break something. All joycon ribbon components can be bought cheap though. All in all great product they just need a better tri-wing screwdriver.I have to say I did expect a little more out of this product however I cant say I'm especially disappointed. My unit didn't come with the extra buttons and triggers as shown in the listing however it was an amazon warehouse product so I cant complain too much. I would expect all the items would be included were the product bought new.The included screwdriver is pretty nice and definitely adds to the value of the kit, my only gripe with it is that it's not magnetic which is annoying when working with such tiny screws so I kept a magnetic one beside me to fish out the little screws. For some good points, the colour is rich and deep and looks stunning which is the main reason I have no real complaints. The 'soft touch' finish is advertised all over the product page however in person it doesn't do a whole lot and doesn't give the shells anymore of a premium feel over the original so you're essentially buying just the colour which is fine but the advertising is maybe a little misleading. Another point about the finish is that its a bit more of a grease magnet which is something to keep in mind if kids will be handling the console.Installation was fine, no harder than you'd expect from something like this and it took me around an hour to do the pair. My overall take away is these are a great option if your shells are a little worn down or you'd just like to personalise the switch.I have broken one side of my Nintendo switch controllers and was looking to buy new ones. I clicked onto this product and looked at the pictures and was like” yes this looks good and customisable aswell” so I ordered it. Turns out it was only the case. I am so pissed but your poor advertisement. A case for the joy cons should be the first names for it not somewhere down the line. I was really expecting good controllers instead I got a case for them. Please change your pictures from a controller to just the case because this is really confusing and annoying.
