If you've played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, this is the original Japanese Super Famicom (SFC) release. The only tangible differences are going to be the title screen (no fancy castle/sword going through the title logo) and of course all the text is in Japanese. If you're just casually picking up SFC games, this one doesn't really require an ability to read Japanese to play. If you're familiar with the game, nothing is operationally different. If you've never played before, you may miss out on some nuances here and there, but worst case scenario a walkthrough online or a player's guide would still get you past being stuck somewhere due to the language barrier. Please note: old cartridge games with the save feature, such as this one, rely on a coin-type battery to power the memory that stores your save data. If you're planning on playing this game on either a modified (de-pegged) Super Nintendo or a Super Famicom console, the battery may have expired. The copy I purchased was listed as 'acceptable' condition, which was fine for my needs; however, I discovered the battery inside had apparently been replaced and that the replacement had been taped into the battery connector. The cartridge would not save when I first tested it, but some fiddling and a folded piece of paper to help secure the connector to the battery had the cartridge saving again just fine. (I'm completely uninitiated in the ways of the soldering iron, and kinda get a kick out of jerry rigging this kind of stuff anyway).Having already had the necessary tools and some experience with cleaning up old gaming stuff, I knew what I was getting into and overall I'm satisfied with my purchase, just wanted to help others to be aware before diving in. Threw in a photo of the game working on a Super Nintendo with the top shell removed (I don't have the guts to rip those pegs out and I plan on mostly playing this on a Retron 5 anyway, also please excuse the clutter in the background!), as well as the tape job done to the cartridge battery.I have difficulty thinking of anything to say that hasn't been said already. This game is a classic and is a must-own for any 16bit enthusiast.Though the story heavily plays on classic archetypes (random young boy must save princess, guided by old sages) the presentation and gameplay of ALttP is so polished.Nintendo came back with a BANG after The Adventures of Link.Gameplay wise, for those not familiar with The Legend of Zelda formula, this game is a puzzle/action RPG type of game. That being said, there is some text (though not as text-driven as, say, Final Fantasy III/VI) which must be noted.Honestly, I picked up this Japanese Super Famicom version as the Super Nintendo version was much more expensive, and it works for me. I don't speak or read a word of Japanese, but I have played this game so many times and am so familiar with the game that I do not need to read the words to know what I must do next.Again, this is a must-have. Cannot praise this game enough.Next to the button where you add this to your cart it says "Buy New". That does not mean it is a new copy of the game, as the copy I received was in very good condition, but definitely not new. I will be keeping it, but I would not have paid as much as I did had I known this. After a month of waiting I finally got it! Some times it's a gamble to get something online and it came with no problems! I even got version 1.0! Best version with all the glitches. If you're a fan or collector this is the product for you!Great game, but not what I ordered. This was originally posted as the original Zelda for the FDS, not the SFamicom....Still loved it though.I got version 1.1 while hoping to get version 1.0. Are any of these games tested to have 1.0 glitches before they are sold? The cart is in acceptable shape, and it works exactly as I had hoped.Any of the 1.0J-specific glitches work and that's the sole reason I bought it in the first place.
